Product Description

In The Joy of Six, Dworsky adapts African and Afro-Cuban polyrhythms to the keyboard in a world-beat classical style. At the heart of the book are four beautiful solo pieces designed to teach different rhythms. Each piece is covered in a separate lesson, where it's broken down into bite-sized patterns that start easy and gradually get more difficult, designed to lead you step-by-step into the magical world of 6/8 time. As you work through the patterns, Dworsky will be with you every step of the way, anticipating your questions and pointing out whatever will make your journey easier. His clear writing makes rhythmic concepts easily understandable, while his conversational tone creates the feel of private lessons. And the CD that comes with the book contains a recording of every pattern and piece, making The Joy of Six a complete self-instruction package.

Alan Dworsky (along with Betsy Sansby) of Dancing Hands Music is well known for his excellent books, cd's, and videos on percussion. This is his first foray into keyboard instruction, and what a joy The Joy of Six is.The book and accompanying cd focus on 6/8 time for keyboard. Alan has written four compositions (he calls inventions) and has broken each invention into several easy-to-follow patterns. Learn each pattern one by one, put them together, and suddenly you are playing beautiful music for keyboard in 6/8 time. Within fifteen minutes of opening the book and listening to the cd, I was playing the first few patterns to invention one, and was so excited I could hardly stand it.I own dozens of books and cd's on keyboard instruction. The irony here is that although Alan is best known for his instruction books on percussion, The Joy of Six is easily the best, most systematic, most immediately rewarding book on keyboard playing I have ever used. So lucid and well thought out is Alan's method that it isn't necessary to read music to work through this book. Just follow the boxed diagrams and listen to the cd.Thank you Alan and Betsy for producing the best book on keyboard instruction I have found. And please, please bring out more for all of us aspiring keyboard players.Schim Schimmel
